Portugal

Portugal is one of the world's great homes of indigenous grape varieties. From the cool Atlantic coast to the hot inland valleys, its wines are defined less by international grapes than by the distinctive character of local varieties, shaped by ocean winds, mountains and altitude.

Climate & Viticulture

Portugal can be understood through three broad influences:

  • Atlantic Coast — cool, maritime and humid, producing fresh, aromatic wines with vibrant acidity.
  • Inland Regions — moving away from the ocean, the climate becomes hotter, drier and more continental, producing riper, fuller-bodied wines.
  • Mountain Vineyards — in warmer inland regions, altitude moderates temperatures, preserving freshness and extending the growing season.
  • Wine Classifications — Portugal's quality system is built around origin: DOC (Denominação de Origem Controlada) is the highest level, with strict rules on grape varieties, yields and production; Vinho Regional (IGP) is a more flexible category allowing a broader range of varieties and styles, including international grapes.
