Despite lying at a warm Mediterranean latitude, South Africa produces some of the world's freshest wines. The secret lies in the cold Benguela Current and the powerful Cape Doctor wind, which moderate temperatures, preserve acidity and create ideal conditions for high-quality viticulture along the Cape.

Climate & Viticulture
  • Benguela Current — A cold Atlantic current that cools the Cape's vineyards, slowing ripening and preserving freshness.
  • Cape Doctor — A strong southeasterly wind that ventilates vineyards, reducing fungal disease while moderating summer heat.
Signature Grapes
  • Chenin Blanc (Steen) — South Africa's flagship white variety and the world's largest planting of Chenin Blanc.
  • Pinotage — A uniquely South African crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsault, created in 1925.
  • Cape Blend — A South African red blend that must include Pinotage, alongside varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Shiraz.
