The Big Picture

Tokaj

Tokaj is one of the world's greatest sweet-wine regions, where centuries of tradition have refined the transformation of botrytised grapes into wines of extraordinary concentration, purity and longevity. While noble rot makes these wines possible, it is the careful selection and handling of botrytised berries that defines Tokaj's unique identity.

Climate & Viticulture

Moderate continental climate. The meeting of the Bodrog and Tisza rivers creates cool autumn morning mists that encourage Botrytis cinerea (noble rot), followed by warm, dry afternoons that limit unwanted rot. These conditions provide one of the world's most reliable environments for the production of botrytised sweet wines.

  • Furmint — the backbone of Tokaj, providing high acidity and exceptional ageing potential.
  • Hárslevelű — contributes floral aromas, spice and richness.
  • Sárga Muskotály (Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains) — adds lifted floral and grapey perfume.

A single, singular region built entirely around botrytised sweet wine.
