The World's Essential Grapes

Ink and burgundy engraving of two grape clusters — pale white grapes and dark black grapes — with vine leaves, tendrils and pruning shears
The Idea

Every great wine begins with a grape variety. Like marble to a sculptor or oil paint to a painter, the grape is the medium through which the vigneron works. It provides the colour, structure, aromas and potential of the finished wine, while the place where it grows and the choices made in the vineyard and winery shape its final expression. These eight grape varieties form the foundation of the Level 1 course. Learning to recognise them is the first step towards understanding the language of wine.
